Everything You Need to Know About Milk Bath Sessions
Milk Bath Sessions are the Best!
Milk bath sessions are my new obsession. I love them for so many reasons. They have this very organic, cottage-core vibe. Think vintage tubs, cotton blankets, lace dresses, and fresh fruit. The other wonderful thing about these sessions is that it is naturally engaging for your child. If you have a child who loves the water, nothing is more exciting than sitting in a tub, outside in the sunshine, playing with floating fruits and flowers. It’s a great opportunity to capture their inner world at this stage of their lives.
Who, When, Where?
While these sessions are so cute, they aren’t for everyone. In order to safely conduct this session, your baby needs to be able to sit up confidently and independently. As a result, milk bath sessions are fantastic for babies that are 9-18 months old. Your baby will be the only person in the tub- the tub is simply not big enough for more people. However, you can include parents, siblings, and even pets just outside of the tub.
Milk bath sessions can be scheduled indoors or outdoors. Outdoor sessions should be scheduled when it is over 80 degrees Fahrenheit. We don’t want kiddos feeling too cold during their session. You can also schedule a milk bath session inside your home during colder months. In any case, we don’t need a lot of space to make the magic happen! The photos included at the bottom of the article were taken in the corner of my own front yard.
Staying Safe
When planning your session, one of the first questions I’ll ask you is whether your child has any food or plant allergies- the milk bath is made with water mixed with milk, oat milk, almond milk, or coconut milk. We will add fruit, vegetables, herbs, or flowers for pops of color. However, if your child has too many allergies, we can just use bath toys instead.
The other safety risk during a milk bath session is ensuring the baby doesn’t slip in the tub. I provide a bath mat as a precaution, but you can never be too careful! For this reason, an adult needs to be next to the tub at all times. Whether or not you plan to be in the photo, you’ll need to stay within arms reach of your child.
Protecting Your Baby’s Privacy
I understand that everyone has different boundaries when it comes to their children. During the consultation, we‘ll discuss what you’re comfortable with. Some parents want an au naturel look- I will never post these images on my website or social media pages. Unless specifically requested, I won’t take any photos of your child’s bottom or private areas. If you are especially concerned with privacy, I highly recommend purchasing a reusable swim diaper for the session. These are a super cute alternative to disposable swim diapers. A white swim diaper likely won’t be noticeable on camera at all. You might also take the opportunity to add some color with a simple print.
If you love these sessions as much as I do, let’s connect! I don’t think I can ever have too many milk bath sessions on the calendar.
