Frequently Asked Questions

Let’s simplify your experience by answering some questions I often get regarding my photography services.

General FAQs

  • I shoot at many locations scattered across Middle Tennessee and North Alabama. You might find me at a park, greenway, historic district, downtown areas, museums, or a public garden. I will travel to other locations by request!

Locations for my seasonal minis are pre-determined. However, when you book a stand-alone session you may have the opportunity to select your location.

I offer location guides as part of my client resources so you can get a clear idea of where you might like to shoot.

I’m always happy to offer suggestions if you’re stumped!

  • Absolutely! I love in-home sessions. These are mostly requested for newborn sessions or holiday sessions. However you can book an in-home session for any occasion.

I have a few blog posts on the subject, including tips to prepare your space for a home session, and concept ideas for home sessions.

  • As of 2024, my turn around timeline has changed.

You can expect your sneak peek gallery within 72 hours of your session.

Your final gallery will be delivered within 14 days.

  • All of my packages include edited digitals from your session. I set a minimum for transparency, but I will pull everything I can from your session. This means most clients walk away with at least twice as many images than the minimum.

You can order prints through me. I work with a professional print lab to ensure high quality products.

However, printing with me is not a requirement. You can use your print release to print with any third party lab of your choice.

  • All of my packages include your 30% nonrefundable deposit, pre-session support, access to my client resource center, session time on location, online gallery, and print release.

Select packages include access to my client closet, additional individualized support, and props.

  • LOCATION FEE
Some locations might have a location fee ranging from $10.00-$300.00.

If your selected location requires an additional photography fee, it is not included in the price of my services.

I outline locations with fees in my guides, and I will do my best to communicate any fees with you before we finalize your details.

    PRINTS
I offer prints for an additional price. I have a la carte options as well as print packages. My prints are ordered through a trusted, professional lab. However, printing is not a requirement when you book with me! You are welcome to use your print release to order from a third party lab of your choice.

  • Item descriptionThe short answer is no.

Unedited photos are unfinished- they’re basically the first draft in my creative process and they’re not included in the price you pay for my services. All that behind-the-scene’s stuff is really only for my eyes, but I promise you are getting the best of our time together!

  • When you book with me, you pay a 30% nonrefundable deposit that holds your place on my calendar.

If we have to reschedule for personal reasons, sickness, or weather, I will apply your deposit to another time/date.

  • Of course! People often include their dogs, but I’m open to working with other animals.

I include a pet guide in my client resources so we can make this a seamless process.

  • I primarily favor lifestyle photographer over traditional portraiture. This style focuses on natural, candid moments.

I use prompts instead of posing- suggesting ways you can interact with each other and the environment to encourage genuine connection.

While I work in some in-door locations, I don’t do studio work or ornate set designs. Working in an everyday setting adds layers to the storytelling element of lifestyle photography.

Finally, I almost exclusively work with natural light. Natural lighting is universally flattering and helps to achieve a softer aesthetic. I have experience with flash photography, but that is often reserved for events.

Facilitating a session in this way feels more organic and enables me to capture those micro-seconds of emotion that make your photos FEEL sentimental.

  • I use professional editing tools to achieve my ever-evolving editing style. Over the years, I’ve carefully curated an aesthetic that is inspired by film photography.

I love incorporating slightly warmer tones to create a cozier feel to your images. I intentionally balance texture and softness to add layers of interest to your photos.

I routinely conduct some detailed edits (removing distracting elements in the background, temporary blemishes on the skin, etc). I don’t do extensive edits, such as head swapping and body modification.

  • The time of day can impact the undertones of your images. Morning light is soft and has a blueish tone. This light is deal for a soft, tranquil, or even refreshing vibe.

By contrast, late afternoon light is a little more intense, and has a yellow/orange tone. This lighting creates a vibrant, ,energetic, and sometimes romantic emotion in your photos (think “golden hour”).

I like to avoid direct over head light because it can cast harsh, unflattering shadows.

With these things in mind, I typically schedule photos between 7-10AM, and 2-6PM- depending on the time of year.

I stick to this rule of thumb, even when scheduling in-door sessions.

  • In general, I ask that clients book at least two weeks in advance. This gives us plenty of time to communicate and plan for your session.

During the busy spring and fall seasons, it’s a good idea to book at least a month in advance. These are both popular seasons for photo sessions, and I tend to book out quickly during this time of year.

My schedule frequently changes, so it’s worth asking about last-minute availability if you need photos ASAP. I can’t guarantee a spot, but I do my best to accommodate all inquiries.

  • I offer year-round mini packages. These sessions are 30 minutes long, with a guarantee of at least 15 edited photos. You are welcome to book this package as it suits you.

I also conduct themed minis multiple times a year. These sessions incorporate a specific theme or aesthetic. Props, dates, and locations are chosen ahead of time. Examples include wildflower minis, apple picking minis, and hot cocoa minis.

  • I give all my clients access to my resource center where you can view my client look book. This will give you 40+ outfit ideas and style guidelines for your session.

As a general rule, neutrals photograph well. They’re timeless and lighter colors help bounce light into the face, making your skin look brighter. Bright colors near your face (i.e. your shirt), can cause a color cast on your face- reflecting that color in your skin tone.

Patterns are great and add interest in the photos, but I’d limit it to one or two patterns and pull the rest of your colors from those patterns. Unless you’re going for a matchy look (i.e family Christmas PJs), I would also avoid duplicate outfits.

Textures photograph well and add so much in a more subtle way. Knits, chiffon, suede, corduroy, and denim are all great options.

Family Session FAQs

  • Everyone’s needs are different, but here are some things I would consider when booking your package:

Do you have multiple kids under five, or a family size larger than six?

Would your kids benefit more from a fast paced session or a more laid back session?

Do you have a list of shots and accommodations that are important to you?

Do you have outfit changes you’d like to incorporate?

What is your budget and package requirements?

Your answers to these questions should help you gauge how much time you need in a session, and therefore which package to book.

  • I include a lot of movement and play in my sessions, which helps kids to warm up. It helps that I have a few tricks up my sleeve from years of photographing families, my time spent as a preschool teacher, and navigating my own children.

Sometimes kids have bad days though- so what do we do?

The first thing is to stay calm, and keep it light. Kids will usually match our energy so if we’re getting caught up in their bad mood, it’s game over.

I am really patient, and I make an effort to meet kids where they’re at. I won’t be overly demonstrative with a shy child, and I won’t tease a kid out of their bad mood when they don’t know me. I make space for them to come forward.

Sometimes a kid needs more time- so I will focus on other family members until they warm up. Sometimes they need control, so I’ll let them dictate a few poses. Sometimes they need a reset, so we can take a quick water break and calm down.

In extreme cases where we’ve tried everything and nothing is working, I’m happy to offer a reshoot. I would rather we all walk away happy than try to force something to happen. That being said, I haven’t had to offer a reshoot for a child’s bad day yet!

  • Yes! I love it when everyone wants to get in the frame. Something to note is that I don’t book these sessions as minis. I only book these sessions as classis or extended packages to ensure we have enough time to work with everyone.

These are largely requested around holidays when everyone is together. However I don’t have much flexibility between my personal celebrations and extra busy work schedule in the fall/winter months. So if you’re wanting an extended family session between September-December, plan accordingly!

  • When doing a family session, I try to cover all the bases.

I will take whole family photos, shots of the kids together, and individual shots of each child. We might also do each parent with all the children, and a few shots of just the parents together.

This is a rule of thumb and can be altered to fit your needs- we’ll cover your specific requests in your pre-session communication.

Newborn Session FAQs

  • When you book with me, we will use your due date as to hold your spot on the calendar, while maintaining flexibility in my schedule around that time.

After your baby is born, you can reach out so we can officially finalize your details.

It’s important to book your session ahead of time, using your due date as an estimate for your session date. This allows us to prepare for your session before baby comes.

  • I schedule newborn sessions between 8-10 AM. Even though we will be most likely indoors, I rely on natural light for creating flattering skin tones. This means a usually work in the mornings or late afternoons.

Life with a newborn is precarious, especially in the evening when it’s close to witching hour. Mom and baby are most rested in the morning, making it a more seamless experience.

  • Fresh 48 sessions take place within two days after baby is born. These are for those that want those super tiny newborn details.

Lifestyle newborn sessions can take place before baby is two weeks old, or after they’re a month old. Around the three week mark, babies will go through their first developmental milestone- which means more disrupted sleep patterns and possibly cluster feeding. This can lead to a harder to settle baby on your session day.

Anytime within the first two months is considered the newborn period, so if you need more time to recover and adjust to all the change, there is no rush.

  • Yes! After you request an upgrade, I will deduct the cost of your newborn session from your first-year package and send you everything you need to get started.

  • Comfortable, loose fitting clothes are great for post partum, especially if you’re still healing from a C-section delivery. Flowy dresses and lounge sets are great options. This is the time to keep it simple!
