5 Ideas for a Unique In-Home Session
Welcome to the next part in my Home Session series! If you know me, you know I love a good mood board to showcase concepts visually. Here is a list of some things you might consider for your next home session, along with lovingly curated mood boards to give you a better mental image of what I’m imagining. These ideas can be adapted for families, couples, and even friend groups.
Arts and Crafts
If your family likes a good creative vibe, we can document a fun activity. Whether you want to delve into origami, paint with watercolors, or try your hand at a clay project, we can create gorgeous photos.
You can take a festive spin on this activity and craft gingerbread houses, ornaments, or handmade cards.
Baking with Love
Baking is inherently a cozy aesthetic, and it’s a great activity that everyone can bond over. Maybe you have a recipe that’s a seasonal favorite, or one that’s been passed down by previous generations. Maybe your extended family gets together every year to make something special- like perogies, tamalas, or dumplings. A holiday favorite is baking and decorating Christmas cookies.
Baking can be an involved thing, but I have some photography tricks that will mimic the experience without taking hours of your evening while we wait for the dough to rise.
Front Porch and Empty Houses
When we bought our first home, we invited a few friends to hang out in the empty space before we moved in. We ordered pizza and gave the kids nerf guns to duke it out. Then, when we redid our living room space, my son and I grabbed our skates and put our skills to the test. An empty home is a rare creative opportunity. Might as well make some memories with it!
In a similar way, your front porch is often an unused creative space. Front porch sitting was a tradition in previous generations. Now we rush past our decore and into the privacy of our homes. We can bring back a little sentiment by using this space to create an active or cozy atmosphere. We can pull out vintage toys, fly paper airplanes, play ball in the yard, make chalk murals, or just blow bubbles. Or we can grab some warm blankets and a pile of books to enjoy with a glass of lemonade or hot chocolate.
Both of these are great options if you want to document purchasing your new home.
Pajama Party
Nothing says home like lounging in your pajamas. Using sleepovers as inspiration, we have a lot of room to create a fun and cheerful environment with this theme.
Whether we’re camping out in the living room, or piling into the parent’s bed, your kids will love this concept. I’m thinking of bowls with popcorn and candy, blanket forts with fairy lights, pillow fights, face masks, and board games.
We can adapt this concept to better fit your family’s interests. Or we can make it more romantic for couples with glasses of wine, candles, and fairy lights.
Tea Party and Backyard Picnics
I loved backyard picnics as a child. I did them often with my son, and now that we have a designated eating space, we try to eat outside as often as we can.
This concept embraces natural lighting, the intimacy of being in your own space, and childhood nostalgia. For extra cuteness, let your littles invite their favorite stuffed lovies to the session.
The skies are the limit with the home-session concepts. If you love the idea of a home-session but you want to think outside of the box, let me know! I’m happy to brainstorm with you.
