Tips for Creating a Space for In-Home Photography Sessions

I love a good in-home photography session. There is something particularly sentimental about doing a session in the place where your everyday moments happen. I most often do these with newborn sessions and my “Home for the Holidays” Sessions. However, there are many reasons why you might prefer to have a session done at home. In-home sessions aren’t weather-dependent. They give you more creative control. As a bonus- no travel is required!

My favorite thing about these sessions is they’re inherently a little more laid back. We can get more creative and play with different themes that might not be otherwise accessible. You don’t even have to have the picture-perfect space- a corner next to an open window will work wonders. Here are some quick tips to get you started:

1) Declutter and Organize

Your space will feel more tidy if you clear surfaces- focus on tables, countertops, and shelves. Removing any unnecessary clutter will help the focus stay on you and your family.

2) Consider the Light

We will want to work in the room that gets the most sunlight during the time of day that your shoot is scheduled for. I don’t rely on overhead lights because they tend to cast unflattering shadows, so keep this in mind when choosing a room for your session.

3) Create a Cozy Atmosphere

Things like fresh flowers, lit candles, and soft music can signal our brains to wind down. Creating a warm atmosphere puts everyone at ease, and encourages connection- no matter what kind of session we’re doing.
