Your Guide to In-Home Lifestyle Photography Sessions

Blog post about in-home lifestyle photography sessions

What is Lifestyle Photography?

Lifestyle photography is the lovechild of candid documentary photography and traditional portraits.

Lifestyle photographers rely on prompts to instigate spontaneous interactions between subjects. While they will still offer direction and guidance, lifestyle photographers are looking to capture genuine connection and quirks that highlight individual personality.

They might use some elements of posed portraiture (i.e. props, knowledge about posing and what looks good on camera, etc), but they also draw inspiration from unscripted moments.

Why You SHOULD Schedule a Photography Session in YOUR Home

One thing I LOVE about lifestyle photography is that sessions can be conducted anywhere! I've done sessions at parks, playgrounds, hiking trails, nature preserves, museums, and in the home. I think we usually see in-home sessions for newborn photography, but there are a lot of pros to scheduling an in-home session for various other occasions as well!

In-Home Sessions.....

  • are beautifully intimate

  • give YOU creative control over the session environment

  • capture your most authentic moments during this season of your life

  • are ideal for clients with unique circumstances (i.e. medical conditions or allergies)

Tips for Your In-Home Session

Decide on the general idea or activity for your in-home session (see ideas listed below to get you started!)

  • Clean and declutter the space you want to use for your photos- it does NOT have to be perfect or Pinterest-worthy.

  • This can be as much as 1-3 rooms OR as little as one corner- it's up to YOU.

  • Open your windows to let in that gorgeous natural light.

Ideas and Activities for Your In-Home Photography Session

One of the best things about these sessions is you have so much creative control over what you can do. Here are some ideas to get you started- but feel free to contact me if you have your own unique vision for an in-home session!

  • Pajama Party

    • Cozy up in your favorite pajamas, have a family pillow fight, and read your most meaningful bedtime stories.

  • Baking and Dessert Decorating

    • Get in the kitchen and make stuff! Maybe use an old family recipe, or experiment with a new one.

  • Holiday Decorating

    • Setting up the Christmas tree is a ritual we are all familiar with. We can get some special snaps of that initial anticipation for the most magical time of the year.

  • Front Porch & Empty House

    • Buying a home is a major milestone that we can forget to document. We can memorialize this special time by taking photos on your new front porch or in your house before you move all of your things in.

  • Garden Sessions

    • Do you have a green thumb or a garden you're proud of? We can take some unique shots of you and your loved ones working and playing in the garden.

  • Hot Chocolate & Snuggles

    • Hot chocolate sessions are a great add on to Pajama Parties or Holiday Decorating sessions- but they also make wonderful stand-alone ideas.

  • Tea Party & Backyard Picnics

    • Whether it be with your child and their favorite stuffed animals, or a romantic picnic with your beau, these sessions can be customized to best match your personality!

  • Family Game Time

    • Does your family like to play board games? Or do you have a big back yard you like to run around in? We can showcase your hobbies as a family with these sessions!

  • Arts and Crafts

    • If your family likes doing things artsy we can use that in our sessions, too! Sensory play, painting with water colors, building birdhouses- the skies the limit!

  • At-Home Date

    • Most of these ideas can be applied to couples, too. But we can also do things like a couple's cook-off, wine and paint night, cozy reading sessions, and whatever else you might enjoy together!
